slow computer with cogeco highspeed

Postby jackie on Tue Dec 23, 2008 3:59 pm

Hi Our PC purchased in 2004 from your store and it has been running very slow for the last few months. We have cogeco high speed and our hard drive is about 50% full of mostly pictures and a few documents. It is so slow that daily we walk away from it after start up and come back 20 minutes later to check email. When we try to connect to Google it bogs down and we give up. Cogeco says it is getting confused We have 512 MB RAM and our total hard drive is 76.3 GB. The virtual memory indicates paging file size 768mb. We read information on the net and very seldom download - we are not into games etc. We replaced the Cogeco modem and it made no difference. We have defrag and performed disc cleanup with no change.

The problem could be any number of things.

First off, if you have not already make sure you back up your pictures and documents onto CD or DVD.

I would try is removing any old cookies and temp files from the machine using disk cleanup. Assuming your using XP, this can be found under Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.

Then I would run a defragmenter scan on the hard drive and see if that helps. The defragmentation program is under Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools. You should run this several times if the drive is severely fragmented.

Assuming that this does not work, I would say you should bring it into our store so we can diagnose it for you because as I previously stated it could be any other of a number of issues.

If you have any further questions give us a call at (905) 548-9555 and ask for our Service department.
